EDITION: OCTOBER 2009 Minimize

It is almost the end of the year again! Just a reminder: if you want your books before Christmas you’ll need to order them this week (and take advantage of our special offer).

In this newsletter we want to address a question that we are frequently asked on copyrighting. This article will help you understand exactly how to do it.

**HOW CAN I COPYRIGHT MY BOOK?**

You’ve finished writing your book. You’re ready to start showing it. You’re worried about someone stealing your baby and beating you to the publisher’s door. How do you copyright you work so you can keep control of it?

Australian copyright is automatic for certain kinds of work, and is covered under the Copyright Act 1968. You don’t need to go through a registration process or pay any fees. You’re work is covered as soon as you create it in material form i.e. on paper, as a computer file, a film or audio recording.

If you’re concerned about proving you are the original creator of the work, it is a good idea to keep dated drafts, plans and outlines of your work at different stages of development. It is also a good idea to discuss your work with others; oral evidence from the creator and others who were present at the time of creation will be considered important evidence if you need to prove your copyright in court.

For more information visit the Australian Copyright Council at: www.copyright.org.au. If you are in the United States, the United States Copyright Office is available to protect your work. For more information visit their website at: www.copyright.gov
